Clergy Tax - Religious Worker in the US

You are a pastor or ministry worker because you love God and people, not because you love numbers or taxes.

One of the surprises of being a Minister of the Gospel or Religious Worker (as the IRS calls you) is the annual church budget process.  Clergy taxes are a distraction, an inconvenience, and a pain. Trying to finding the tax forms or software keeps you from your calling.  You have a Masters in Divinity, not taxation.

Clergy taxes are complex - a hybrid of individual and self-employed taxation.  There are many tax preparers that prepare tax returns for laity and business people. But clergy taxation is unique.  We prepare tax returns for hundreds of pastors from many different denominations and organizations. Clergy is one of the few professions that have unique tax treatment.

We like pastors and clergy tax.  The reason church buildings are located on the town square along with the town hall, the school and business is because churches are the cornerstone of our communities.  Let us take care of your US taxes so you can shepherd the people in your care.

Our clergy are a cross-section of the Christian community.  Our pastors live in church-owned parsonages/manses and/or have a Clergy Housing Allowance.  Our clients like using a tax preparer who is familiar with the unique aspects of clergy tax.

The Dual Status of Clergy
Pastors and the church have a unique place in American history.  Pastors are the only individuals that can opt out of social security. The dual status of clergy means pastors should receive a W-2 as an employee.  But they are virtually the only employees that pay self-employment tax as self-employed business owners.  They are the only employees that can receive compensation for housing that is not subject to income tax and still deduct the housing expenses like rent, real estate tax, and mortgage interest.  Some of our clients receive clergy housing allowances from US employers and some receive clergy housing allowance from foreign-based entities.
