Cru and RMO Staff - Tax Planning and Preparation for Clergy Workers

You are a Cru-RMO worker because you love God and people, not because you love numbers or taxes.

One of the surprises of being an RMO staff or Religious Worker (as the IRS calls you) is that according to the IRS you are a member of a Protestant religious order. Clergy taxes are a distraction, an inconvenience, and a pain. Trying to find tax forms or how to answer tax software correctly keeps you from your calling. You want to minister to others, not earn a master in taxation.

Clergy taxes are a complex hybrid of individual and self-employed taxation. There are many tax preparers that prepare tax returns for laity and business people. But clergy is one of the few professions that has unique federal tax treatment. RMO staff are treated as clergy. We understand that you need to pay Self-Employment tax (also known as Social Security tax) on your W-2 income. We prepare tax returns for hundreds of pastors from many different denominations and organizations.

We love RMO and clergy tax. We love your faithfulness to Christ and to the Gospel, and your desire to meet the needs of those around you. Let us take care of your US income and Social Security taxes so you can shepherd the people in your care.

Our RMO clients are a cross section of Cru. They include new staff just starting in college ministry and others who have been serving overseas for years with children going off to college. Our clients are working across the ministry with Athletes in Action, Agape, Bridges International and Family Life. We have American and international Cru clients who are working in the US and overseas. Our clients like using a tax preparer who is familiar with Cru and the unique aspects of clergy tax.

Cru RMO, MHA & Social Security
We understand the Cru process of setting up Ministers Housing Allowance (MHA). We understand the tax impact of taking too little or too much MHA. We know where to find your MHA on the W-2 and when it is subject to income tax and self-employment tax. We understand staff “opting out of Social Security" on form 4361. We prepare Schedule SE every year for all US Cru staff who do not have an approved form 4361.

Let us calculate what is due to Caesar so you can impact lives for Christ.
