Parents with Dependent Children

When your children were born or adopted you were flooded with emotions.

My wife and I remember our shock and amazement when she was discharged with our first child from the hospital.  The nurse just waved and we thought, “She is just going to let us drive away with this new life without signing away our lives, or taking a test to see if we were ‘qualified’ or mature enough.”  (See what too much time in school will do to you.)  We had signed more papers the prior week when we bought our first home.

You want to be a good parent and spend time with your child.  You do not want to study tax law.  You are not a tax nerd like we are.  (I, Bret, asked the doctor if the C-section could be planned a week earlier rather than a week later without jeopardizing our daughter in order to maximize the tax benefits.  The Dr.’s answer was, “All you accountants are the same.”)

So what are the benefits of having children?  Much could be said about the joys of parenting, but we will deal with tax benefits.  Depending on your situation, having children could:

  • Increasing your refund with the refundable Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.

  • Increase your deductible expenses if you use childcare.

  • Change your filing status (if you are a single parent or married to a non-American).
